Seago - Lawn

“Lawn” by Seago is beautiful anti-pop song that embodies sad nights in the rain. Emotion bleeds through Seago’s auto-tuned crooning, while lyrically the song show remarkable self awareness.

The first verse talks about heartache felt by both Seago and his friend. Seago is ignoring a girl after toxic behavior, while Seago’s friend could be losing custody of his kid. In the worst of heartbreak it’s easy to be “checking for the greener grass”.

Due to the internet and the rise of social media, we only see everyone’s highlights. When you are only see the people’s life through a tinted lens, the pressure of our own problems can weigh heavier. Seago sees through this lens and describes it through lyrics such as:

“Can’t judge the neighbors by their lawn. Because inside, because inside who knows what’s going on?”

As well as further on:

“I keep on thinking, that I’m the only one With problems, but you’re in a situation I’d be covering up too”

The second verse shows the cycle continue however. Seago states how he didn’t have money before but he’s broke now. As well as wanting a relationship that can’t be perused further due to lockdown.  Both sentiments describing how Seago’s pain makes him always look onward towards the grass on the other side.

Being self aware of flawed perception seen does not always erase the perspective held. “Lawn” is a sad song that perfectly expresses the cognitive dissonance that happens through trauma in an easy digestible way for everyone.
