In the song “Traffic in the Afterlife”, Kyle Stibbs paints the portrait of a conversation with his grandpa while his grandpa is on his deathbed. From a younger perspective, an elderly family member can not always look entirely like themselves near the end of their life. Kyle Stibbs addresses this in the beginning of the song.

The Grandpa in the story of “Traffic in the Afterlife” then poses the title’s question asking a priest if there is traffic in the afterlife. Elaborating on the question, he goes on further to explains how years earlier he had lost his wife and thus doesn’t want to wait in traffic after dying before he can meet her again.

As a response to the question the priest holds back a grin wanting to stick to the specific prayers he had prior planned to deliver instead of addressing the question. The chorus then plays again, in context of the story and lyrics the Grandpa repeats his question again to the priest wanting clarification still.

During the bridge, the Grandpa of the song persists saying he needs to know the answer and that he is not trying to bother the priest. Expanding on the question more he ponders if there is police in heaven and if he will get in trouble with them by speeding because he is in a rush to reunite with his late wife.

In the context of the story, the question is meant as method of diffusing the tension of room as the Grandpa is aware the people in the room worry about losing him. The Grandpa deflects from this by focusing on the positive in his mind of reuniting with the love of his life after time and death has separated them.

Through ear catching lyrics describing a relatable experience Kyle Stibb releases another incredibly powerful performance as a singer-songwriter. Many lines feel quotable and give a visceral feeling. One example being: “Handcuffs in heaven don’t sound fair”.
