Seago - Standards

Seago is a rising indie pop artist whose music is delivered with poignant lyrics, highlighted by soulful vocals. Debuting in 2022 with the song “Lawn”, (which was covered by deadEGOs), Seago’s second release of 2023 is the ear-worm of a song titled “Standards”.

Using an emotionally vulnerable delivery, poetic lyrics and dark pop melodies, Seago captivates the listener immediately. Creative choices of having his falsetto fading in and out during the chorus adds texture to Seago’s vocal delivery.

The instrumental of “Standards” starts with a repeating kick that feels akin to knocking at a door. As the rest of the beat drops, the back melody is almost an echo of faster tempo instrumental indie pop star d4vd would use. Seago differentiates himself from other pop artists however by focusing on telling his own story through his personal and memorable lyrics.

Throughout the chorus Seago is disproving of an ex’s recent lover choices and behaviors in general. Telling his ex to have better standards for herself, coming off across as both advice and a diss. On one hand Seago is telling his ex lover she can do better, while on the other hand describing her new partner as a downgrade compared to Seago.

Continuing on in the song, Seago tells his ex lover she can get back with him if she ever wanted to get with someone more “real”. Seago also disapproves of her friends not telling her that she deserves better than the new guy she’s currently with.

The outro of the song shows how Seago truly feels saying: “It’s not that deep. You’re probably thinking it was to me? I’m just lonely, it’s not that deep”. Backpedaling on how invested he is in his ex lover’s current relationship, Seago confesses to being lonely influencing his thinking.

Prior to “Standards”, Seago’s debut of 2023 was the collaborative track “could’ve been”. Featuring Seago, as well as up-and-coming artists Tino Sutra and harper, “could’ve been” is Seago’s biggest release (so far) on Spotify with currently over 23,000 streams. Between the success of both “could’ve been” and “Standards”, it’s clear Seago’s niche for writing pop hits will only continue to grow further throughout his career.
