Sugar Pit - Customer Service

Alternative artist Sugar Pit releases an anthem for all retail employees titled “Customer Service”.  During the release of “Customer Service” Sugar Pit peaked at over 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and he currently sit at around 75,000 monthly. Sugar Pit has had his biggest release with “Customer Service”, which currently sits over 500,000 streams on one platform.

Originally going viral on tik tok, “Customer Service” catapulted Sugar Pit in front a new audience. The largest reaching piece of content currently sits at over 3.3 million views. Posted in April, the viral clip, shows Sugar Pit singing “Customer Service” and doing random employee tasks at Walmart, concluding with a manager walking Sugar Pit out of the building.

The instrumental mirrors the cognitive dissonance retail employees see daily through customer interaction. The moment Sugar Pit starts to say he agrees with the customer, the instrumental glitches and becomes more chaotic. Similarly, in customer facing roles employees often feel blood boil beneath the surface while accommodating difficult customers.

Sugar Pit’s delivery also becomes more aggressive near the end, with his emotions becoming exacerbated as the song goes on. The growing chaos in the song’s beat and Sugar Pit’s vocals helps symbolize the waning patience workers feel as the day inches on.

Lyrically the song is an ear worm that matches to a tea how it feels to work at a job on autopilot. Creatively referencing stereotypical statements retail employees have said to customers; the song is full of gems any grocery store employee would recognize.

For the official visualizer on YouTube, Sugar Pit fuses three tik toks that originally went viral for the song onto on screen. All three of the short form content combine showing Sugar Pit performing “Customer Service” in full at Walmart.

Sugar Pit followed this visual with an official music video co-directed by Tim Waldron and Chris Moon. Produced by Medium Luck, the music video shows Sugar Pit in monotonous different jobs from an office to a factory and more. Creatively using satire to mock corporate supervisors who sometimes treat employees as a cog in the capitalistic machine.

As a self produced singer-song writer, Sugar Pit captures the feelings of the everyday person. Through folk inspired alternative songs describing daily life, Sugar Pit has found his first hit song with “Customer Service”.
