Justin Sowers - Summertime Ends

“Summertime Ends” is a light hearted song about the desires of a hopeless romantic. Justin Sowers delivers a genuine emotional performance in “Summertime Ends” as his second song of 2022 following “Pretty Little Lies”.

Justin Sowers currently sits just under 2000 monthly on Spotify. One of the most popular releases of Justin Sowers’s being the 2020 collaborative EP with rising star JXVE titled “DEXD the Experimental Project”. The EP containing the title song “DEXD” which has over 300,000 streams on Spotify alone.

Throughout Justin Sowers discography, including his 2021 album “listen when ur sad”, he shows his emotional transparency through expressing his inner turmoil in his music. Melodic hip-hop with catchy choruses and powerful verses shine in Justin Sowers songs, and “Summertime Ends” is no different despite its atmospheric change.

A gentle guitar melody starts paired with a vocal sample for an instrumental that feels like hot chocolate on a cold autumn day. The sample itself feels almost reminiscent of songs on cartoons like Adventure Time. Whisper vocals of the sample cuts away, providing room for Justin Sower to drop in; meanwhile a simple drum beat enters on top of the guitar playing. Drum kicks and soft strings continue with occasional piano highlights.

Thematically the chorus paints imagery of longing for love and wanting to experience all of life with the other half of your heart. Justin Sowers sings lyrics that question his lover’s loyalty while downplaying his own worth. Sentiments in “Summertime Ends” are similar to “21 Questions” by 50 Cent and Nate Dogg yet sonically maintains a more light hearted approach.

Around the half way point of the almost three minute song, Justin Sower switches from singing to rapping. Doubling down on the same lyrical content, Justin Sower performs a clean mixed rap verse. The tail end of the verse has Justin Sowers describing anxiety of losing his lover if they don’t choose to stay with him due to his internal struggles and growing pains.

Smoothly transitioning back into the melodic chorus, “Summertime Ends” ends with an outro that lets the same sample from the intro plays yet softer. This loops back into the intro and song as a whole for a fluid replay experience for when you wanted to binge the song on repeat.
